From the Denton Gridiron to Two Wheels

I expected the next chapter of my journey to come from a track, a stage or the seat of a sportbike—not from someone else’s words.

Today, someone shared a write-up about my journey from playing football in Denton to becoming a professional sportbike freestyle rider. I did not ask for it, and I did not know it was coming. That made reading it even more meaningful.

When you are living through a journey, you rarely stop long enough to see the entire picture. You remember the practices, injuries, setbacks, long drives, closed doors and moments when you had to decide whether to keep going. Then someone else puts the pieces together and reminds you how far the road has taken you.

This is what he wrote:

From the Denton Gridiron to Two Wheels: The Incredible Journey of Ian Gaines

Before he became one of the most recognizable names in sportbike freestyle, Ian Gaines was making noise on Friday nights in Denton.

A gifted and explosive athlete at Denton High School, Gaines was the kind of player coaches loved. He was versatile, physical and willing to do whatever the team needed. As an elusive running back, his job was to move the chains and put points on the board.

His athletic ability earned him the opportunity to continue his career at the highest level. He signed with Vanderbilt University and competed for the Commodores from 2000 through 2003.

At Vanderbilt, Gaines demonstrated the same versatility that made him special in high school. He contributed at running back and wide receiver before transitioning to defensive back. He was a true football athlete whose value came from his ability to impact the game wherever he lined up.

When his football journey ended, Gaines did not stop competing. While rehabilitating after college, he discovered a new challenge: sportbike freestyle.

What began as curiosity developed into a second professional athletic career. Gaines transferred the explosiveness, body control, discipline and competitive mentality he developed on the football field to mastering a 400-pound motorcycle.

For nearly two decades, Gaines has performed on stages across the country, completed more than 1,000 live shows, earned the support of industry leaders such as ICON Motosports and LeoVince Exhaust, and become a mentor and ambassador within the sportbike community.

The same qualities that made him special on the football field including discipline, fearlessness, toughness and competitive drive helped him become a professional sportbike freestyle rider.

Ian Gaines is another example of the depth of athletic talent that has come out of Denton.

Some athletes make their mark in stadiums.

Others create their own arena.

Reading those final words stayed with me.

Football gave me the foundation. Sportbike freestyle gave me a new arena. My family, partners and the people who have supported me have given the journey a greater purpose.

The arenas may have changed, but the commitment never did.

I am grateful to Steven Mullen for taking the time to recognize my journey and share it from his perspective. Sometimes we become so focused on the next destination that we forget to appreciate the road we have already traveled.

I am still competing. Still creating. Still building.

Rooted. Never settled.
